How to Manage Stress Before a Job Interview in English?

Michał WilkMay 16, 20262 min

The Root of the Problem

The biggest problem during a job interview in English is not your lack of vocabulary, but the overlapping of two stressful factors: the interview itself and the necessity to speak in a foreign language. Your brain enters a "fight or flight" mode, which literally blocks access to the vocabulary you perfectly know on a daily basis.

Technique 1: Predictable Answers (STAR)

You don't have to be a master of improvisation. Use the STAR method to structure your answers:

  • Situation (Context)
  • Task (What you had to do)
  • Action (What exactly you did)
  • Result (What the outcome was)

Prepare 3-4 universal professional stories in English using this structure. You can adjust them to fit 80% of behavioral questions.

Technique 2: "Power Posing" and Breathing

It sounds like a cliché from a coaching manual, but it works biologically. Two minutes in a power pose (e.g., hands on hips) before the interview lowers cortisol levels. Additionally, deep breathing (inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 4, exhaling for 4) calms the nervous system.

Technique 3: Honest "Small Talk"

Don't pretend to be a native speaker. A great psychological trick is to openly admit you're slightly stressed because of the language, but you're thrilled about the opportunity. It shows authenticity, builds connection with the recruiter, and instantly takes the pressure off you.

Summary

Preparation is the key to lowering stress. On my Executive Coaching sessions, we do rigorous mock interviews, analyzing your answers word by word. Once you answer difficult questions a dozen times in a safe environment, the actual interview will be just a formality.
